Abstract

Information obtained from exploration drilling in Chumporn Basin, in the western part of the Gulf Thailand, suggests that the Basin has a good petroleum potential. Geothermal gradient of it is, therefore, classified as a cold basin. Data from 9-466/IX exploration well, the only well drilled in the basin down to 3811.27 meter, were used in classifying sediments of the basin into 12 facies of different depositional environments, ranging from non-marine, fluvial to coastal plain environments. Petroleum source rocks were penetrated from 2081.81 to 3657.65 meter in the well. Palynological study indicates that the oldest sediments of the basin, penetrated by the drilling, are of Oligocene age.
